'Maker' Camp at HZR

Summer Maker Camp at Hereford High will be held in the Technology Education the IDEA Labs, (AKA Digital Manufacturing Lab, Maker Space) as part of a community outreach program of Hereford National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). NTHS students will demonstrate the use of various computer design programs and the process of fabrication using a Laser Engraver, 3D Printers, and a CNC Machine.

IDEA Lab

The IDEA Lab is the home of research into digital fabrication, computation and video production. IDEA is the acronym for Imagine, Design, Engineer, Achieve. The Hereford IDEA Lab is a technical prototyping platform for innovation and invention, providing stimulus for local entrepreneurship. IDEA Fab Lab is also a platform for learning and innovation: a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, to invent. Through the IDEA Lab, members will be able to connect to a global community of learners, educators, technologists, researchers, makers and innovators- -a knowledge sharing network that spans 30 countries and 24 time zones.

Age groups

Summer Maker Camp at Hereford High will be offered to elementary school and middle school students in order to foster an early interest in technology and engineering. The camp will be made available to a total of 14 students. The goal is to have a counselor: camper ratio of 1:3. This will ratio will allow all campers (and counselors) to feel a sense of success. This event is not just about education, it is about having fun too!
During the first two days of the camp will focus on an introduction to the three fabrication methods (Laser, 3D printing, and CNC machine). As participants are introduced to a design and fabrication method they will be working from a template (Examples: address sign using ShopBot CNC, Key ring for Epilog laser engraver), The last three days students will be permitted to design and make items using their choice of fabrication, including incorporating digital fabrication to robotics. It is our hope that after the student is introduced to Hereford’s IDEA Lab they will return during monthly ‘Community Nights’ to further explore this 21st century ‘Maker Space’.

The Hereford NTHS is a student honor society supporting the exploration and promotion of Technical and Engineering fields. NTHS members will volunteer time and gain service hours.
